What are the signs that your lawn could use aeration? If you see weeds, excessive runoff, puddling, heavy clay soils, thin lawns or bumpy lawns, you may very well have a candidate for aeration. Newly sodded lawns can also benefit from aeration. The prime times of the year for aeration are early fall and late spring.

Fertilizing

Think of fertilizer as the nutrients your lawn will consume to grow and prosper. And just like humans or animals, not all lawns are the same; they need different types and levels of nutrients. Fertilizer contains a mix of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium.

A properly fertilized lawn will look healthy and enhance the appearance of your home and property.

Yes, aeration holes create the perfect nest for seeds to root in. If overseeding is not done after the introduction of more water, oxygen and nutrients to the soil, weeds can start to thrive. Overseeding will take nutrients away from the weeds and create a healthier lawn.

Aeration holes are about ½-3/4 inch in diameter and 3-4 inches deep. This is the perfect size to break up thatch, allow water and other nutrients to seep into the soil, encourage new root growth, and establish a stronger, deeper root base for a healthier lawn.

This changes based on your lawn, but to prevent weed spread no lawn should go more than ten days between mows. Regular mowing helps with good grass health and ensures that only the best grass survives.

You should wait at least a week after aeration to mow your lawn. This will give the soil a chance to take in all the water, oxygen and nutrients. Once you mow your lawn, the soil will break down and fill in all the aeration holes.

You should water your lawn twice a week as early in the day as you can. Make sure it gets about one inch of water or water for approximately 20-30 minutes. In warmer weather your lawn will require more water. Grass roots are about 6-8 inches underground, so you should be able to push a six inch screwdriver into your lawn.
